About The Idea Jam

The Berkshires Black Healthcare Equity ID3A Jam is an initiative born from the collaborative efforts of the Black Health Care Equity Taskforce, formed in October 2021. Initially convened by the Chair of the BHS Council for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI), the taskforce comprises six BHS employees and two community members dedicated to addressing the healthcare needs of the Black community in the Berkshires. Over eight in-depth meetings, the taskforce has developed a comprehensive report outlining actionable strategies to bridge the healthcare gap and rebuild trust between BHS and the Black community.

The Problem

In Berkshire County, Black communities face significant healthcare disparities that undermine their well-being and trust in the healthcare system. Research highlights that Black and Brown communities experience higher rates of illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma, and heart disease compared to their White counterparts. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these inequities, leading to higher mortality rates and reduced access to essential healthcare services. A persistent lack of trust exists within the Black community towards Berkshire Health Systems (BHS), fueled by perceptions of unequal treatment and systemic barriers that hinder access to quality care.
Your voices, experiences, and innovative ideas are essential in shaping effective solutions that address the unique challenges faced by Black individuals in accessing and utilizing healthcare services.

Together, we can dismantle systemic barriers, foster trust, and create a healthcare system that truly serves and empowers our community.

We urge members of the Black community, allies, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and advocates to join the Berkshires Black Healthcare Equity ID3A Jam.
